Dept Begins Culling of Pigs in Gopenga

KUALA LUMPUR: The Veterinary Services Department began the operation to cull pigs infected with the Nipah virus at Ladang Weng Yoon in Gopeng, Perak, yesterday.

The operation was a follow-up to the quarantine order issued on May 26 after pigs in the farm were found to have contracted the virus, it said in a statement.

The culling of 1,725 pigs is expected to be completed today.

It said a worker at the farm had been found to be infected with the Nipah virus, believed to be the first of such cases this year.

It said the department was also monitoring Ladang Chuah Boon Swan in Simpang Halt, Taiping, Perak which had 300 pigs of which some were suspected to be carrying the virus.

"This farm has been given the quarantine order. Movement of pigs from this farm is strictly prohibited,'' the department said.--Bernama
